Nature Play

Numala jajumm, numala nabei … embrace children, embrace play…

Numala Logo TransparentNumala means ’embrace’ in Yugumbeh language, the voice of the traditional custodians of the Nerang and surrounding Gold Coast areas. Numala Kinder Nature Play is my expression of education and all that makes me smile: embracing children, nature and creative play.

Numala Kinder Nature Play acknowledges the traditional lands of the Yugumbeh people and celebrates this connection in all areas of the daily program. Yugumbeh language is woven into all creative activities, and listening for the songs and stories of our natural world is daily practice, an integral part of belonging, being and becoming in this place of learning. Numala Kinder Nature Play encourages children, with appropriate adult supervision, to test their balance, take calculated risks, pursue interests through personal projects, engage with their local environment and celebrate their personal creativity.

Consultation to early childhood services and educators is a part of my service, introducing nature play, teaching storytelling, environmental connection, leadership and sustainability in education. For more information about nature play programs or consultation services, visit

  1. What an amazing concept and beautiful culmination of ideas. Well done on all your research to bring the culture of the Yugumbeh people, including their language, into early childhood development. So impressive and as always – inspirational!

    • Thank you Joanna 🙂 It has become increasingly clear to me that our identity is tied up with our sense of belonging, and our sense of belonging is bigger than our daily experience. It is about history and culture and listening to the earth’s stories. To belong as an earth citizen in THIS place. I’m excited about exploring this with children.
